Cape fur seals
The Cape fur seal is the only seal that breeds in Southern Africa. They breed in approximately 25 colonies between Algoa bay and northern Namibia the bird island in Lamberts bay has a colony of a few hundred in the winter months to a few thousand in mid summer.
Adult males average 2.5 meters and about 300 kgs females less than 2 meters and under 100 kgs.
Pups are born in late November to December, Six days after giving birth the females mate again the implantation of the embryo is delayed for 4 month followed by a 8 month gestation period.
In the 17th century the Netherland, France the UK and the USA harvested seals on the west coast, measures were introduce to control the harvesting of seals in 1893 when the population was estimated to be 100,000 seals today there are approximately 1,5 million fur seals and there has been a monotorium on seal harvesting since 1990.
